The Education Department, Government of Sikkim is the nodal department responsible for the planning, administration, regulation and development of school education in the State. It oversees Government schools, teachers and educational institutions; implements educational policies, schemes and programmes; conducts and supervises examinations such as STET; regulates private schools; monitors academic standards; and coordinates teacher training, student welfare and other educational initiatives. The Department works towards ensuring accessible, equitable, quality and inclusive education and the overall development of students across Sikkim.
The State Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) is a State-level eligibility examination conducted by the Education Department, Government of Sikkim, in accordance with the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE ACT 2009) and the minimum qualifications laid down by NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education). This test is for individuals to be eligible for appointment as Primary Teachers for Classes I to V and Elementary (Graduate) Teachers for Classes VI to VIII.
Eligible candidates must possess the prescribed academic and professional qualifications. The detailed schedule of the STET is advertised in local newspapers in English and Nepali Editions well in advance, and the STET Information Bulletin covering details is uploaded on the TET web portal and Departmental website for information. Candidates can apply for STET through the online TET portal.
STET serves as an important eligibility mechanism to ensure that teachers possess the requisite academic knowledge, pedagogical understanding and professional competence required for effective teaching in schools of Sikkim at the Elementary level.
